10. Bath Maintenance and Ampere-Hour Tracking
Maintenance philosophy
Do not wait for bad parts before maintaining the bath. Preventive control is cheaper than scrap and rework.
Track:
- Bath volume
- Temperature
- pH
- Current and plating time
- Cumulative ampere-hours
- Additions
- Filtration
- Anode condition
- Appearance
- Thickness
- Hull-cell results
- Unusual events
Ampere-hour tracking
Ampere-hours = Amperes × Hours
Example: 20 A for 45 minutes:
20 × 0.75 = 15 Ah
Add this to the bath’s cumulative total.
Why ampere-hours matter
Electrical throughput provides a practical workload metric. Commercial additive systems may specify replenishment or analysis based partly on ampere-hours, but never assume a generic replenishment rate. Use the product manufacturer’s instructions and analytical results.
Volume control
Evaporation changes bath volume and therefore operating condition. Restore volume using the water quality and procedure specified by the chemistry supplier.
Anodes
Inspect anodes and bags for:
- Passivation
- Sludge
- Poor electrical contact
- Uneven consumption
- Torn or clogged bags
Never correct blindly
If appearance changes, first verify temperature, pH, current density, contacts, agitation, filtration, preparation, and contamination history before adding proprietary additives.
