5. Plating Steel, Copper, Brass, and Stainless Steel

Steel

Typical logic:

Mechanical finish → Degrease/clean → Rinse → Activate → Rinse/transfer → Nickel plate

Prevent flash rust between cleaning/activation and plating. If rust appears, the surface is no longer properly prepared.

Copper

Copper is generally straightforward when clean and oxide-free. Avoid excessive activation that attacks the surface. A uniform water-break-free rinse and prompt transfer are important.

Brass

Brass can plate well but contains copper and zinc, so aggressive chemical treatment can selectively attack the surface. Watch for smut, discoloration, or etching after activation. Use a brass-compatible preparation sequence.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel is intentionally passive and therefore more difficult. A validated activation plus nickel-strike sequence is commonly used before the main nickel bath.
