3. Surface Preparation
Surface preparation is the highest-leverage step in nickel plating. A perfect bath cannot plate through oil, oxide, polishing compound, fingerprints, scale, or a passive surface.
Mechanical preparation
Finish the substrate to the quality expected beneath the nickel. Nickel generally reproduces underlying scratches, pits, waviness, and polishing defects rather than hiding them.
Typical operations include sanding, deburring, polishing, blasting, or other substrate-appropriate finishing.
Degreasing
Remove bulk oils before precision cleaning. Do not move heavily contaminated parts directly into a process cleaner because that rapidly loads the cleaner with oil.
After cleaning, handle parts with clean gloves or dedicated fixtures.
Water-break test
After cleaning and rinsing, observe the water film.
Pass: water sheets uniformly across the surface.
Fail: water pulls away, beads, or forms islands.
A failed water-break test means the surface is not ready for plating. Re-clean it. Do not expect activation or nickel strike to compensate for grease.
Rinsing
Use clean rinses and avoid dragging cleaner into activation or plating tanks. Counterflow rinsing and multiple rinse stages can reduce contamination in production.
