9. Bright vs Satin Nickel, Plating Time, and Thickness
Bright nickel
Bright nickel systems are designed to produce a reflective or high-luster deposit when the substrate is properly polished and the bath is correctly controlled. Brightness depends on the complete process—not simply adding more brightener.
Over-addition can create its own defects. Follow the commercial additive supplier’s dosing and analytical method.
Satin nickel
Satin nickel intentionally produces a softer, lower-gloss appearance. Satin appearance may depend on specialized chemistry and tight agitation/particle control. Do not treat a dull bright-nickel bath as a satin process.
Plating time
Time is selected from:
- Required thickness
- Actual deposition rate
- Current density
- Cathode efficiency
- Part geometry
- Specification requirements
Thickness control
For production, verify thickness using a suitable measurement method rather than estimating from color or time alone.
Build a shop-specific deposition-rate curve:
- Use representative coupons.
- Record surface area and current density.
- Plate at controlled temperature and pH.
- Measure thickness.
- Repeat at several times/current densities within the approved window.
- Use the resulting data for scheduling.
Appearance versus thickness
A part can look bright before it has adequate functional thickness. Appearance is not a thickness measurement.
